Hardware Considerations

There is a whole bunch of gaming laptops, from different manufacturers, having different sizes, specialities, price ranges and specifications. Is there a way in which we can shortlist the laptops that actually suits us from this large and diverse market? The answer is yes. For that first, we need to understand the laptops in this list, especially how they compare against each other, and what tasks they are good at. But you need to read this only if you need to understand the merits and demerits of your laptop.

If you don’t need to know in-depth, and just want to get the best laptop available, go to the suggestions directly. for those who are staying, we have made sure the ‘Theory session’ is easy to understand and well structured. One last thing before we begin. we all might have some kind of notion and hence preferences towards different brands, But let me assure you, having used and checked all these companies, We can guarantee that no one brand is inherently better than the other, But laptops are.

For example, Hp is not better or worse than Lenovo, in the first example But HP Victus is better for some people because of certain factors. And brands have different series of laptops. Asus has TUF for the lower end market, while Strix caters to a higher price segment. Lenovo similarly has Ideapad and legion 5, Acer has nitro and Predator, and HP has Victus and Omen respectively. you cannot directly compare the specs of laptops of the two series, as they offer different values.

1. Processor

Asas Tech

The processor is a Primary deciding factor for the overall performance of a gaming laptop, along with its graphics card. there are many factors deciding what makes a processor better than the other, but they are more complicated and non-conclusive. Therefore the specifications that manufacturers provide, such as the clock speed, turbo speed, cache size etc do not indicate any type of performance. a 4 core processor with an 8MB cache clocked at 3.8 GHz may be more powerful than a Hexa-core processor with 9MB cache clocked at 4.1GHz. Don’t believe me? check intel i7 8750H vs i5 11300H.

Then what would indicate the actual real-world performance, to the best possible extent? The answer is Benchmarks. These benchmarks have 2 parts, single-core and multicore. A higher single score indicates faster app loading, smoother browsing, navigation etc, while a higher multicore count indicates faster rendering, video editing and other such highly threaded workloads. For this post, we are considering 2 benchmarks.

  1. CIneBench R23 (For Content creators, game developers etc as it is more indicative of the raw performance, which matters when using apps like a blender [3-D animation], premier pro and unreal engine [Game development] )
  2. GeekBench (for everyone else including gamers, it considers many other factors that are commonly used in normal day to day tasks, such as web browsing, gaming, file management etc.

2. Graphics card

Asas Tech

Choosing the graphics card might be a little tricky because even though there are different processors, they all have different names. But in the case of Graphics cards, 2 graphics cards with the same name can have vastly different performances. The key factor that decides the performance difference between these graphics cards will be its TGP ( thermal graphics power ) is the amount of power a laptop motherboard provides to a graphics card. In layman’s terms, the higher the TGP of a graphics card, the higher will be its performance.

Remember the Max-Q variants? they were lower TGP siblings of the 16 series cards. Nvidia just took away the Max-Q from the 30 series processors, so there is no way of knowing if a graphics card is lower power or not unless the manufacturer states it. But giving an RTX 3050 130 W will not make it as powerful as a 130W 3060, and increasing power increases performance up to an extent only. For 3050, this is about 95W, for 3050 TI, it is about 100 and for an RTX 3060, it is about 130

(the numbers are not a fixed value as Nvidia does not provide a specific number, but the wattage of the best laptops with that card, which should be accurate enough as they would have done the testing)

3. Display

Asas Tech

the next major factor in deciding on Gaming laptops are the displays. Basically, there are four types of displays in gaming laptops,

  1. Normal displays (60Hz standard Display, for budget devices)
  2. High refresh rate monitors ( Suitable for gaming )
  3. Colour calibrated high-resolution displays ( suitable for content creators)
  4. Colour calibrated high refresh ( best of both worlds but also very costly )

The final decision should be yours to make, But do keep in mind- If you only game once in a while, a high-quality panel is better for you. But if you are a gamer, nothing can replace a high refresh panel in terms of gaming experience, and colour accuracy does not matter as much as fast refresh do. But if you are a content creator, a high-quality display will be necessary, so that the content you created is the same for your viewer also.

4. Ports, battery and other parts

This is one of the factors that many fail to take into consideration. As this list includes laptops below one lakh, all the laptops in this range are the base series of their respective companies, except the G15, and hence it would have a better body, peripheral support and premium look to it.

This section cannot be detailed more. It is up to you, the USer to decide what type of device you need, and what are your priorities. For example, As much hype as colour accurate SRGB 100 panels have, many if not most users won’t find a difference unless compared side by side with a better display.

The Best Gaming Laptops in India

now that we have discussed various factors to consider while buying a gaming laptop, let’s get into the list of best gaming laptops in April 2022. some entries have 2 options because they are better for different people, and neither can be a clear winner.

1. Lenovo IdeaPad or HP Victus(Ryzen 5 5600h GTX 1650)

these two are the cheapest laptops on the list. Even though there are gaming laptops for as low as 50k, we have not included them because there is a large gap between performance, build quality and Features. If there is no way you can reach a budget of 70K, in order to buy an RTX card, One of these could be your next laptop

Both these Laptops have the same processor and graphics card, the AMD Ryzen 5 5600H and Nvidia GTX 1650. These are also the only two laptops with GTX cards in them. But they differ in almost everything else, from display to dimensions. Performance is solid in the processor department for both devices. Even if it is the slowest processor in this list (i5 11300H costs around the same, and hence could not make it into the list), it is more than enough for most tasks.

The GTX 1650, even though is now last-gen, can keep up with recent AAA games in FHD if you do not want to set high or ultra-graphics. the HP Victus has a 16:10 60Hz display, and the Ideapad has a 16:9 120HZ display.  Both are good in their own way, but the Ideapad will serve the gamers better while the content creators and normal users might benefit from the larger display. The number of ports in both the Victus and Ideapad is lower than ideal. But since there are not many other great options, we would have to adjust with the limited USB type B ports (1 on each side). Or buy an extension hub.

Advantages and disadvantages of HP Victus

A feature of the HP Victus is its Speakers. They are on a different level than the other laptops, even the TUF and the nitro 5, and deliver a much more balanced, rich and pleasant sound with deep bass. An issue to notice is the screen wobbling on the Victus, and I’m not kidding, it shakes even if there is a powerful fan in the room, and the build is not as rigid as the other laptops in the list.

Advantages and disadvantages of Ideapad

The best feature of the Ideapad is its keyboard and Trackpad. It is better than the Victus, nitro and the Tuf. The trackpad is also larger, has a smoother surface and is easier to use. The Ideapad gives the least ability to control system performance from its toolbox(Vantage). There is no fan/GPU/CPU control, which reduces the flexibility of the laptops.

2. Lenovo IdeaPad (Ryzen 5 5600H RTX 3050)

The second Entry from the list, the Ideapad has a Ryzen 5 5600H and RTX 3050 @80W, which is even better than the TUF and Nitro that once had MRP around this region. However, it still has the same issues as its cheaper sibling, but at a higher cost. Still, s the cheapest option with an RTX 3050, and that too with a reasonable TGP, this laptop will be ideal for those who made the jump from 60K to 70K, and those who value performance more.

3. Asus Tuf or Asus Rog Strix

Asus Tuf had a price drop on many of its laptops, with its TUf A15 with i5 11400H and 3050Ti, available at 75K. making it the cheapest gaming laptop with RTX 3050TI. On the other hand, the ROG Strix, from Asus Itself is targeted at a different audience. Its premium build quality along with RTX card and Ryzen 7 4th gen processor, makes it an appealing device for those who want a premium experience, even if the performance is a bit low.

Advantages and disadvantages of TUF A15

The advantage of Tuf is its Specifications. The laptop is fast and Packs the best specs in this price range. It is the best laptop in the range for content creation and gaming alike, unless you want the best display available. The disadvantage would be its trackpad. If you don’t want to use your trackpad as primary, then this laptop has no defects.

Advantages and disadvantages of Strix G15

The advantage of the Strix G15 is its build and design. It is designed to be a premium product, and it delivers, from the beautiful under glow to the large array of ports in the back, the laptop screams premium. If that is what you are looking for, no other laptop might suit you more. The processor could have been an i5 11400H, which would have made this laptop a clear winner and the best option in this segment.

  • RGB Backlit Keyboard
  • Windows 10

4. Acer nitro 5 or Asus Tuf F15

For those who need more than 4GB VRAM, and to play AAA titles in high or higher settings but still do not cost as much, the two laptops from Acer and Asus are best. they will be able to play the latest games at a respectable 50FPS+ in the highest graphics in FHD, so the performance would not be an issue. another perk is the 6GB VRAM, which makes it better for 3-D or video editing workflows, that would hugely benefit from higher VRam.

Processor vice, the two laptops are better at two different things. While the i5 inside the TUF can provide a better single-core score and hence better normal and gaming performance, the octa-core Ryzen 7 5800H pulls ahead with a significant margin in heavily threaded tasks such as content creation. They both come with an RTX 3050, but the TUF has a 10W higher TGP. This further makes the TUF a better choice for Gamers.

Advantages and disadvantages of Acer Nitro

The advantage of nitro over Tuf is its processor, and higher performance in multi-threaded tasks making it more suitable for content creators. The speakers could have been better at this price point, and a larger battery would also have been a welcome addition.

  • RGB Backlit Keyboard
  • Windows 10

Advantages and disadvantages of TUF a15

The advantage of Tuf is its higher TGP GPU combined with the processor with faster cores, which makes the Tuf better at gaming. on the downside, the material of the laptop feels plasticky and cheap even though the build quality is good. the trackpad also could have been a bit larger.

TUF (RTX 3060)

  • Windows 10
  • RGB Backlit Keyboard

5. Acer Nitro 5

The Acer Nitro 5 is the best laptop for this budget. it comes with the latest i5 12500H, which is Faster than a Ryzen 7 5800H while being significantly more power-efficient than the other. it also comes with a new body, that has a significant upgrade in look and builds quality, which makes it even better

Advantages and disadvantages of Nitro 5

The advantage of the nitro 5 is its intel 15 12500H, which beats even ryzen 7 5800H, and comes with significant improvement in thermals and battery backup, thanks to its power and efficiency core(P and E). it also comes with a new body, which is an added cherry on top.
